GARAGE DOOR GUIDE / WINTER

A practical winter check for your garage door

Prepare around three questions: does the door move correctly, do the seals contact properly, and are the safety systems functioning?

Start with the manufacturer’s maintenance instructions

Maintenance intervals, approved lubricants and safety checks depend on the equipment. Keep the door and opener manuals together. Garaga publishes maintenance guidance for its own products, but service intervals can differ by door, hardware and manufacturer.

Check the weather seals

With the door stationary and safely closed, inspect accessible perimeter seals for obvious damage or loss of contact. Note whether any visible gap is at a side, the top or the floor. A floor gap may involve the slab or door position as well as the rubber. Check which retainer and seal profile your door uses before buying a generic replacement.

Keep the tracks and doorway clear

Check the space occupied by the moving door and the area around the photo eyes. Stored items, debris or accumulated snow should not obstruct the path. Do not repeatedly run an opener against a frozen or stuck door. If the door will not move normally, stop and have the cause assessed rather than increasing the force setting.

Know what not to adjust yourself

A visual inspection is not permission to loosen brackets or adjust springs. Worn or frayed lift cables need professional attention. Use only the lubrication points and products specified for the equipment; spraying everything is not a substitute for diagnosis. A recurring noise deserves an explanation, not an ever-larger dose of lubricant.

Keep the opener and door information handy

Save the opener model, service records and any installed component details where you can access them without entering the garage. Know how the emergency release works on your opener, but never disconnect an open or damaged garage door. A separate garage entrance is also relevant information when requesting service.

Call when something changes

Call for service if you notice new noise, uneven movement, damaged seals or a failed safety test. A seasonal review should distinguish required repair from optional improvements. Ask what a check includes, whether repair authorization is separate, and what further work is needed before normal operation. No website article can certify the condition of an unseen door.

The takeaway: Use the equipment instructions, address visible defects and do not force a stuck door through its travel.
